What is it?

The Commons is a collaborative online newsmagazine about non-profits that serve the Silicon Valley, the people behind them, and the people that they help -- written, edited & produced by students in the valley.

Why do it?

• Recognize the good work done by hundreds of organizations and thousands of people in the valley
• Tell the stories of those who were helped
• Relentlessly sunny; an antacid against the stories that typically get media attention
• Give students a forum in which to practice disciplines in mass communication, including research, interviewing, writing, editing, photography, illustration, audio/video production, and internet publication
• Give students opportunities to meet and work with people from other schools, non-profits, government, media
• Help students build their resumes and connections
• Something meaningful to do with our lives

How do it?

• Plan organizational meeting
• Invite schools/districts to encourage students to participate
• Put up posters, send out flyers, email links
• Get story ideas from non-profits
• Promote online

Down the road

• Once we get the students going, they can take this anywhere, building this community, or building wikis and communities on other things they care about.
• Is this for students only? This is a wiki, and so is open to anyone. We're starting with students because (1) they tend to be more idealistic than older people, (2) they have more time.
